Four Fall Tire Tips

Check your tires, check your air pressure and other tips to stay safe on the roads.

Changing weather and shorter days can make fall tricky for safe driving, but it’s also the perfect time to prepare for what’s ahead.

The Car Care Council, a national nonprofit dedicated to car safety, has declared October “Fall Car Care Month” to help drivers learn the safety and economic benefits of regular vehicle care. And Consumer Reports says that fall is the best time to buy tires for winter.

Here are four more fall tire tips:

  • Always refer to your vehicle’s owner’s manual and follow the recommended service schedule.
  • Check your tires. Driving on worn tires or tires with no tread is very dangerous. Typically, tire tread above 2/32 of an inch is considered to be adequate. However, some tests have shown that 4/32 is a much safer guideline to follow. Learn how to quickly inspect your tires. Wet road conditions can be extremely dangerous when tires have low tread. Reduce your risk of hydroplaning.
  • Check your tire pressure – cold weather can reduce tire pressure, and it’s safer to drive on tires that are properly inflated.
  • When temperatures dip below 45 degrees, it’s time to think about winter tires. Winter or “snow” tires are made from softer rubber that does a better job of gripping cold pavement. Winter treads are also specifically designed for snow and ice. Studded winter tires provide extra control but wait for snow pack. Studs don’t perform well in rain.

If your tires are worn or have low tread level, do not let the high cost of new tires scare you from fixing the problem. Champtirescan help you get affordable, quality used tires with good tread depth – in any brand name or quantity that you need. Search our inventory and shop online now (free shipping is always included) or stop in at one of our three Pittsburgh-area tire stores.

How To Find Your Tire Size and Determine Tire Tread Depth

Find Tire Size

Tire Size

Tire sizes are a series of numbers that refer to the tire’s width, aspect ratio and rim size. They are typically found in two places:

  1. On the tire’s sidewall. (See above image for an example)
  2. On a sticker on the inside of the driver’s car door.

You can also search Champtires’ website to find out what tire size(s) fits your vehicle.

Tread Depth

In the U.S., the accepted measurement for tire tread levels are in 32nds of an inch. Tire tread gauges are used to obtained specific measurements. Most passenger tires start out with a tread level of 10/32. States, like Pennsylvania, that have vehicle safety inspections require tires to have certain tread depths to pass. Typically, tire tread above 2/32 of an inch is considered to be adequate. However, some tests have shown that 4/32 is a much safer guideline to follow.

When tires are worn or nearly bald, the penny test is useful.

Tire Safety in the Rain

Reduce your risk of hydroplaning and make sure your car’s tires are not worn or bald.

Typically, tire tread above 2/32 of an inch is considered to be adequate. However, some tests have shown that 4/32 is a much safer guideline to follow, especially in dangerous weather conditions like rain and wet roads.

When tires are worn—or even bald—their grooves are no longer able to adequately obtain traction. This causes hydroplaning, or the loss of steering, braking and power control.

And hydroplaning can occur even on damp roads, so it is important to be aware of your tires tread levels. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recommends checking tire tread levels monthly. Learn how to quickly inspect your tires.

If your tire tread depths are low, don’t let the high cost of new tires prevent you from replacing them. Champtires sells premium used tires at the lowest prices. With more than 30,000 tires in stock, Champtires can get you the size, brand and tread depth you need—all while saving you up to 80% off the cost of new tires.

Why Buy Used Tires?

If you’re in the market for tires, considering used tires is a good choice if you’re looking to save money. However, not all used tire stores are created equally, so make sure that you purchase used tires from a reputable seller, such as Champtires.

Even if you just need to replace one tire, the cost of rubber has increased dramatically recently and has caused the price of brand new tires to skyrocket. High-quality used tires are a much more affordable option.

Used tires are also an environmentally friendly choice – you will be using a premium, recycled product.

Are Your Tires Ready for Snow?

5

Snow is in the forecast, Pittsburghers! Are your tires ready? Here are a few essential tips.

Having the correct tire pressure is essential for proper handling. A temperature change of just 10 degrees can cause a ten percent reduction, or constriction, of air in tires. So tire pressure can be affected from day to night temperature – not to mention when temperatures drop severely.

Check the optimal tire pressure of your vehicle on the label inside the driver’s door frame or in the owner’s manual.

Worn tires—especially bald ones—can be deadly on wet or snow-covered roads, where the grooves aren’t deep enough to channel water or snow out from beneath the tread and affects control of the steering wheel. Wet-weather braking and snow traction also decrease as tires wear.

ConsumerReports.org has said about tire tread levels that, “Unfortunately, 2/32 of an inch may be too late if you drive in rain or snow. Based on our tests of new and half-tread-depth tires, you may want to consider shopping for new ones on your car or truck closer to the 4/32-inch groove depth.”
