Gas Mileage and Your Tires

Learn how important your tires are to maintain a good fuel economy.

Gas prices are high and poor fuel economy is bad for the environment. Did you know that your tires impact your car’s gas mileage?

  • Not only are worn or bald tires dangerous to drive on, but they reduce the vehicle’s gas mileage. Uneven and low tread patters force your car to work harder to attempt to gain traction.
  • Low or incorrect tire pressure will result in a two percent loss of gas mileage for every five pounds per square inch (psi) of pressure that is below the manufacturer’s recommendation. Learn more about tire pressure.
  • Unbalanced and misaligned tires also hurt gas mileage.
  • Snow tires — which are great for driving in snow and other winter weather conditions — impact gas mileage. Be sure to take them off once spring arrives.

If your tires are causing problems and you’re looking for a way to save up to 80 percent off the cost of new tires, Champtires has thousands of used tires for sale. It doesn’t matter if you need one, two or a whole set – Champtires will get you the tread level you need in the brand name that you trust.

Champtires offers free shipping to the continental U.S. and a 14-day satisfaction guarantee. We also offer monthly specials.

Don’t Ignore the Tire Pressure Light

Low tire pressure can cause dangerous driving conditions

When temperatures fluctuate drastically, it’s common for a car’s tire pressure to change, causing the monitoring light to activate. However, this doesn’t mean that you should ignore the notification.

A spokesman for the Rubber Manufacturers Association explained “that yellow Tire Pressure Monitoring System light isn’t a friendly warning to put a little air in the tires – it’s an emergency warning that a tire has lost at least a quarter of its pressure.”

Driving on tires with low pressure can cause serious damage to the tires and your car. Low tire pressure will cause your car not to be able to handle steering and braking properly and can lead to blowouts, flat tires and premature wear.

On the flip side, tire pressure that is too high causes traction and gripping issues and a more bouncy ride.

What is the Correct Tire Pressure for Your Car?

Check your owners guide to find out what the recommended tire pressure is for your specific car. This information is also sometimes found on the inside of the driver’s door.

Do not necessarily follow what is listed on the actual tire. That number is usually the maximum pressure that the tire can handle and not what is ideal for your vehicle.

It’s a good idea to inspect your tires on a regular basis. Also, keep in mind to check all four of your tires. Just because one or two are at an acceptable pressure, does not mean the remaining tires are not experiencing issues.

What To Do When Tires Keep Losing Pressure

If a tire continues to lose pressure after checking and adding air, there is probably a leak or other defect in the tire. Do not panic. Replacing one (or two, three or a whole set), does not have to drain your bank account.

Instead of a new tire, and replacing two or all four, consider buying a high-quality used tire from a reputable place such as Champtires. Champtires has more than 30,000 used tires for sale at any given moment—in nearly every size, brand and tread depth imaginable. And every tire that enters Champtires’ warehouse is inspected and tested.

Simply determine what size your tire is and what its counterpart’s tread level is at, and search Champtires website for a replacement tire.

Four Fall Tire Tips

Check your tires, check your air pressure and other tips to stay safe on the roads.

Changing weather and shorter days can make fall tricky for safe driving, but it’s also the perfect time to prepare for what’s ahead.

The Car Care Council, a national nonprofit dedicated to car safety, has declared October “Fall Car Care Month” to help drivers learn the safety and economic benefits of regular vehicle care. And Consumer Reports says that fall is the best time to buy tires for winter.

Here are four more fall tire tips:

  • Always refer to your vehicle’s owner’s manual and follow the recommended service schedule.
  • Check your tires. Driving on worn tires or tires with no tread is very dangerous. Typically, tire tread above 2/32 of an inch is considered to be adequate. However, some tests have shown that 4/32 is a much safer guideline to follow. Learn how to quickly inspect your tires. Wet road conditions can be extremely dangerous when tires have low tread. Reduce your risk of hydroplaning.
  • Check your tire pressure – cold weather can reduce tire pressure, and it’s safer to drive on tires that are properly inflated.
  • When temperatures dip below 45 degrees, it’s time to think about winter tires. Winter or “snow” tires are made from softer rubber that does a better job of gripping cold pavement. Winter treads are also specifically designed for snow and ice. Studded winter tires provide extra control but wait for snow pack. Studs don’t perform well in rain.

If your tires are worn or have low tread level, do not let the high cost of new tires scare you from fixing the problem. Champtires can help you get affordable, quality used tires with good tread depth – in any brand name or quantity that you need. Search our inventory and shop online now (free shipping is always included) or stop in at one of our three Pittsburgh-area tire stores.

Flat Tire? Don't Stress.

Having a flat or damaged tire is never going to be fun or happen at an ideal time. But Champtires can help alleviate some of the financial stress by saving you up to 80 percent on a replacement tire.

With more than 30,000 premium used tires in stock, Champtires can simply match the tread depth — and even the brand — to your remaining tires.

Save 19% off a tire purchase with this coupon. Valid through Jan 31, 2019.
It’s important to note that if you’re replacing one tire, its tread level should match its counterpart. So front tire tread depths should match and back tire tread depths should be the same. Front and back tires should always be within 2/32 of each other.

If someone tells you that you can’t only replace one tire (or two) and insists that you need to buy two (or a whole set), be sure to question them as to exactly why…tread depths matching is what matters.
